Memento Illustration Skulls

Today's colorful skulls come to us from Tom Hurlock of South Wales, UK. These are planned t-shirt deigns.  I love all of what's going on with these.  The vibrant colors, the geometrical shapes, the graffiti style painting.  You can see more of his work via his Memento Illustration Facebook page.  Thanks for brightening up our weekend, Tom!

Mosaic Skull Heart

Silvia Rosenfelder-Schechtel is back with a mosaic skull heart she created with costume pearls and glass. I love the variation of textures and shine, making both the heart and the skull stand out well. The gold glass teeth are an amusing addition. I could see this used indoors or outdoors, where the sun glimmers off the shiny glass and pearls.

See No Evil Skull

Dan Lane aka Mechanica, creates artwork "based around natural elements i.e. skulls, animals, humans and plants that have taken over, or some how being kept alive by mechanical intervention.  All the pieces are made up of unwanted or thrown away items, people give me anything from old typewriters to fruit bowl! I then create these surreal wall hanging sculptures. The paint effect I use makes the pieces look like they have been cast from metal but the pieces are made up from all sort of different materials." This piece is titled "See No Evil". I love seeing artwork made from old things. This is a great example of how something beautiful can be created from junk. You can see more of Dan's work on his website and Facebook page.

Moose Antler Rings

Scott Middlehurst is the man behind these marvelous moose antler rings. I wish Scott had included where he was from, but I'm assuming it's somewhere that moose antlers are readily available. At any rate, I hear that moose can be pretty mean if provoked so maybe these are some seriously true symbols of danger. Thanks for sharing your craft with us, Scott!

"Portrait For The Tattooed Man"

This oil on board painting is brought to us by Ben Fenton. I believe his "blurb" is enough to tell you who he is and make this painting completely creepy.

"I come from a small place in Kent called Dungeness. I live in a small place in East Sussex called Rye. My childhood was accompanied by a Poltergeist. I’m fascinated by death, disease, deformity, anguish, fear, pain and disability. I paint in response to my fascination."

See what I mean?!?! Thanks for the excellent submission, Ben!

Skull Drawings

Umeko from Edinburgh, Scotland, drew these skulls during a recent visit to the Musee national d'Histoire naturelle (National Museum of Natural History) in Paris, France. I love seeing non-human skulls. The conjoined skull is a great specimen to sketch, as it's a rare natural occurrence. Makes me want to bring along my sketch book on my next trip to a natural history or science museum.

Sunday Simulacra - Version 7.52

Noah Scalin found this skull on a paper covered post near the VCU campus. If you are familiar with these sort of posts, they are telephone poles covered with layers of paper and staples from old flyers. This one appears to have a hole bored into it, which exposes the depth of paper layers. If you've found a simulacra skull, please submit it to us. We love sharing what our skull hunters find!

Memento Mori Skull Rings

These kick ass skull rings are brought to us today from Yukee Chen of Amsterdam, Netherlands. Currently he is expressing his art in the form of making custom jewelry. These memento mori skull rings are forged from various metals including brass, sterling silver, and oxidized sterling silver.  I love the way the bottom jaw is detachable.  It might even look like it's talking when you're moving your fingers.  Thanks for the sharing these, Yukee!

Birds and Skulls

Dan and Anna Barrett, of ChuckleTree, collaborate on a lot of their artworks. Anna explained, "The Crow piece was colored with charcoal, and this has also been made 3 times because my husband is a perfectionist. The Pelican Skeleton was originally created for an art challenge. But we had always wanted a pelican skeleton because every household should have one of those. This was inked by hand, digitally colored, cut by a machine and assembled by hand." I love that they create such wonderful artwork together. I agree, everyone should have a pelican skeleton in their house. Especially if it's as cool as this one. You can see more of their artwork in their Etsy store.

Nuclear Fission Skull

Today's skull from Raik Dalgas is a bit more abstract than some of our usual submissions. Raik writes, "I'm an artist and writer of aphorisms. The skull symbolizes a nuclear fission process. The reasoning to this was the appearance of the man-made nuclear fission process and the impact on nature."  Deeper meanings seem to lie behind almost every skull. Thanks for sharing yours, Raik!

Leather Faced Skull Flasks

Three IS the magic number, and not only do we have 3 skulls on leather clad flasks to share today from Enrique Camacho, but this is also his third time appearing on our site(here are the links to his painted shelf and burned leather bags).  I do have my own skull flask, but this set is way cooler.  Enrique let us know that they were labeled before he put the skulls on them, but it adds a level of vintage that you want from a leather clad glass flask.  Thanks again for sharing your work, Enrique!

Embellished Skull Sculputures

Victoria Stafford, from Brighton, England, creates these one of a kind skulls. Each one is handmade from start to finish. She has a lengthy creation process. She starts with rotocasting each skull in several layers of resin in her self made mold. After fully curing for many hours, she sands the skulls down and starts embellishing them with various materials. To see more of Victoria's work, check out her Etsy shop, Nonnock.

Skull Portraits

Marcus Wemyss, from Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England, painted these Day of the Dead skull portraits. They are oil on canvas and were painted in 2012. I love these portraits, which capture traditional Dia de los Muertos skull makeup. We often get submissions of skull makeup, which are all great. I don't often seen skull portraits, so these really caught my eye. To see more of Marcus Wemyss' work, check out his website, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

French Sk8 Shop Skulls

Nico, aka- 345, is a French artist with this exhibition on display at a skate shop. The pieces are displayed all horizontally, but due to pixel constraints I stacked them so you could get a better look.  I still love the way skulls look when painted on natural wood(here and here).  Awesome stuff. Thanks for sharing these, Nico!

Symmetrical Cloud Skulls

Today's spectacular scenes are from Robyn J. Rivers in Fayetteville, Tx. She adds a touch of symmetry to her cloud and sunset pics to create these. You don't have to use your imagination to see the skull formations in these clouds(unlike some simulacra).  Thanks for sharing your bright idea with us, Robyn!

Oversized Skull

Mel Rudgley from Sydney, Australia, is back with this painting she created using left over Dulux house paint and framed in reclaimed timber. It now hangs above her bed. Her home is now filled with oversized skulls. That seems like my house now. Ever since joining Skull-A-Day, I've amassed a large collection of skull artwork. A mix of mine and from artists we've featured. To see what else Mel is creating, check out her Facebook page.

Huichol Skull

Jake Maughan recently finished his 1st Huichol Skull. He explained "We saw this beautiful artwork in Mexico and it was one of the few things that we could not barter on. I decided I would save several hundred dollars and make it myself. It is done by covering something in Beeswax and then pushing seed beads into the wax with a needle, one at a time. In the end it took 4 months, and approximately 25,000 seed beads to complete." A Huichol Skull is on my art collection list. Because it takes so long to make one, they are expensive to purchase. I appreciate that Jake took the time to do this correctly and learned a new craft.
