13 Skulls

Paul Shubrook is an artist based in Essex, England. He created a series of artworks, "13 Skulls" to explore the form of the skull. The work is produced in ink, water and pencil. Here are a few images of the "13 Skulls" artworks.

A skull is a form which deserves an artistic study. At different angles, it's unusual beauty is seen clearly. The way the shadows cast in it's crevices and the light glows on it's ridges, is haunting. We all have a skull, so we all have that inner beauty. Paul's skull study is a work of art that truly unlocks this dark beauty. His use of blendable mediums helps showcase the unique features of a skull. For more photos of this series, head over to his website.

Sunday Simulacra - Version 5.22

With Halloween one day away, here are some skull items that will help you celebrate.

Mathieu took this photo of his Irish coffee, in a bar in Montmartre, Paris.

Mica (Noah's sister), spotted this in an NYC thrift shop window. Noah said, he is "very tempted to buy it for (his) house".

When I was baking my Pumpkin Skull Cookie, I baked more cookies using the drop method. When I was removing them from the cookie sheet, I noticed this one looked like a skull. This was the first one to be eaten.

Keep sending those pictures in to our submissions address. Just keep in mind that since we only post simulacra once a week it might take a little longer than normal for it to be posted.

Faces of Skulls

As the “Countdown To Halloween” is quickly approaching the end for another year, and since many of our loyal readers will being celebrating this weekend. Here are a few inspirational ideas for those last minute procrastinators.

First up is Cian who sent us this picture of he and his partner.

Next Emily Salsberry showed off her Day of the Dead costume.

and lastly, Vivian Raine, RN said: “Here is a skull pics of our band mate (Christine Hellbourne) in awesome calavera make-up for a Halloween / Dia de Los Muertos show we did last year. I used some glow-in-the-dark effects gel to really make her skull come alive under a black light! It was hard to capture with a camera but it really was stunning in person.”

White Rabbit C says:

Thank you all for submitting another wonderful round of skull face painting. To all our loyal readers, make sure if you get dress up this year as a skull you take a moment and send in the results.

Dia de la Abby: #65 Raven Skull Pumpkin

Halloween is 4 days away, so I saved making a skull pumpkin for this week. This year, I wanted to make a different kind of skull. I choose a raven skull instead of my normal sugar skull. The flowers are marigolds, which are traditional in the Dia de los Muertos celebration and alters.

I used wood carving tools to cut through the pumpkin flesh. This is not hollowed out, so it will last longer. The #21 Pumpkin Skull that I did last October, stayed non-rotten until December. It probably would have stayed nice for longer, if I didn't feel some guilt about having pumpkins on my porch in late December. If you would like to learn how I carved this pumpkin, follow the tutorial.

Every other Thursday in the 5.0 year, I will post my own Dia de la Abby creations   Every Thursday in the 4.0 year, I posted my Dia de la Abby creations and occasionally tutorials with instructions on how I made my pieces. Hopefully you feel inspired by my posts just as I was by Noah's Skull-A-Day 1.0 daily project. Need more of me than just a weekly dose, follow me on  FacebookGoogle+ and/or Twitter.

Stained Glass Sugar Skull

ChaosTheory GlassWorks in San Diego created this stained glass sugar skull.

Since the three day Dia de los Muertos celebration starts in four days, I though sharing this piece was fitting. Of course something this beautiful should be up for more than three days. I like the use of the Dichroic glass for the eyes and nose. The use of the waved glass for the background is lovely. This makes me want to taste a sugar skull.

In your comment I want to know the craziest drink you can think of to drink from this flaming cross skull glass. Make up your own drink if you want and give it a good name. I'm open to suggestions.

Remember, if you don't "Like" my work you wouldn't want this glass anyway, right? So head over to the FB page and sign up. I'll be taking entries until Saturday October 29th at Midnight EST. Good luck and thanks for checking it out!

Skull Case

Everyone we know these days has a set of ear buds(some of us have skulls on ours, go figure), and we all need somewhere to store them when they're not in use. Derek O'Leary has crafted a ceramic case that was a bit inspired by the Skullcandy logo and works wonders on wire management.

This design is as awesome as the idea. It's always the struggle to keep our wires untangled while we still store them in a drawer or some out of the way place. This sculpture case allows for out in the open placement while keeping those crazy cords tamed. I hope this idea gets some recognition for Derek and this product. Sign me up for one! Thanks, Derek.

[BONUS] The Gift of Skulls - 365 Spiders

I found this wonderful surprise waiting for me in my mailbox the other day from Amy Kopperude creator of the amazing 365 Spiders project!...

I've been coveting the amazing handmade beaded spiders she's been creating as part of her project so I was delighted to finally get one of my own. If you haven't been following her project do yourself a favor and scroll through the nearly 300 spiders she's already created!

And then hop over to her Etsy store to see what she's got for sale.

Thanks Amy!

Ceramic Skull

Shelley Spranza submitted this piece. She said "I throw a basic pot form on the wheel and then alter it to my needs. In this case, I didn't need to alter the form, I just needed to carve a skull face when my clay was leather hard. I let the clay dry, then fired it at 1850 degrees, glazed it back and white (three coats each!) then fired it again. I was pleased with the way he turned out! I'm putting him in my Etsy store today.

I like this eerie ceramic skull, because it reminds me of a wide Jack-O-Lantern grin. Halloween is 7 days away, so you all better start carving! Whether it is clay, pumpkins or squash, I expect some haunting faces to live on many of your porches and mantles.

Sunday Simulacra - Version 5.21

Today's skulls are small.

Amy Kopperude from 365 Spiders, said "I bought one of those light-up mouth pieces when I was making my 100th spider, but the first one I bought didn't work. When I cut off the plastic outer guard to see if I could get it to work, this is what I found. I still haven't decided what to use it for." A spider, of course!

Ann Donnell from Sacramento CA, found this skull while taking apart a piece of vintage jewelry to reuse it.

Ivano Malavolta, "found a skull on a glass cabinet in our biotechnology department at the university of L'Aquila, Italy."

Keep sending those pictures in to our submissions address. Just keep in mind that since we only post simulacra once a week it might take a little longer than normal for it to be posted.
